When the hazy, hot and humid weather arrives, it’s important to stay hydrated. Our Registered Dietitian Brandon Walton offers some tips to help you when the heat is on! Make sure you are drinking enough water. It’s important to drink fluids even if you aren’t thirsty. Thirst is not a good signal of the body’s fluid needs. Water is easier for our body to absorb when it is closer to our body temperature. Fruits and vegetables can be hydrating. Certain produce items contain over 90% water. Eating strawberries, cucumbers, melons, peaches, oranges and tomatoes are examples of hydrating produce. Foods like ice cream, popsicles, flavored ice and gelatins can also contribute to your daily fluid needs. Also, try to limit caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea, sodas, alcohol) those drinks can act like a mild diuretic and could contribute to dehydration and water loss.
