American Diabetes Alert Day

Tuesday, March 24 is American Diabetes Alert Day, a time to raise awareness about the risks and symptoms connected with diabetes. Diabetes develops when the body’s blood glucose level is too high. The most common types of diabetes are Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over 38 million Americans have diabetes. Nationwide 1 in 3 older adults have diabetes. CDC data from 2025/2026 finds 18% to 22% of Massachusetts adults aged 65 to 74 have been diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes costs our state an estimated $7.3 billion dollars every year. The proper nutrition is key for older adults with diabetes, as it’s important to learn how to manage blood glucose, prevent serious complications and avoiding malnutrition. All important things to keep in mind so older adults can continue living an independent life. Highland Valley Elder Services can help with nutrition counseling.
